What to wear when cycling depends on what kind of cycling you’re doing. If you are not sure how to pick the right clothes to buy for cycling, then this guide will help you decide what to wear on your ride. There are a lot of different kinds of clothes for cycling so if you are ready to go shopping, then read on.
Cycling Shorts
Classic bike shorts with a pad made of stretchy Nylon/Lycra are the most preferred cycling gear. If you are looking for options, you have two – waist and bib shorts. Waist shorts have elastic waistbands, while bib shorts have braces.
- Bib Shorts. These are more comfortable when cycling because they do not have a waistband. However, because of its design, they make it harder for women cyclists to go to the bathroom.
- Lycra Shorts. Another option are the Lycra shorts or “shy shorts.” There are many mountain bikers, touring cyclists, and regular riders who prefer to use this too. These shorts have a liner that can be taken out and designed to have a loose shell.
Cycling Jersey
A cycling jersey is usually made to look like a t-shirt but is made of wicking synthetic materials or a mix of Merino wool. It has a high neck to protect you from the sun, a front zip, and back pockets to hold your gear. For warm weather, there are short sleeve cycling jerseys that you can use. The materials for jerseys range from very light mesh that lets air in to heavy materials that are windproof and don’t get wet. The thinnest jerseys with pockets are used as base layers, while the thickest, weatherproof jerseys are worn as jackets.
Cycling Gloves
A second piece of classic bike clothing. A track mitt usually has a leather palm with a thin layer of padding, a cotton back with a crocheted design, and a Velcro strap to keep it on the wearer’s wrist. There are many different kinds of gloves. Some have gel padding in the palm, stretchy backs so there’s no need for a Velcro tab, toweling wipes on the thumb, and many other features.
Cycling Tights
Cover up when you know that the temperature is going to be cold. Cycling tights are thicker and they will help cover your ankles and keep you warm. They may come with or without bibs and pads. You could also wear jeans or cycling pants. If you are not into long tights, you can also use three-quarter leggings as they are in between tights and shorts.
These are the basics when it comes to cycling. It is very important that you do not only have the right shorts and headgear, but your clothes must also provide you with functionality and comfort. So when gearing up for a ride, ensure that you have these cycling gear.
